Kittery, incorporated in 1652, is Maine's oldest town.


Kittery's most famous native son is Sir William Pepperell, who in 1745 captured the French fort at Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, one of the major events of the French and Indian wars.


The oldest naval shipyard in the nation is in Kittery.


Twenty-four operating sawmills were counted in Maine in 1682, six of them in Kittery.


The first warship to fly the Stars and Stripes was Ranger, built for Capt. John Paul Jones at Maine's Kittery-Portsmouth shipyard.


Doug Kienia, of Kittery, was the World Junior Champion of Horseshoe Pitching in 1975.
